NSARDA Search Dog handler Andy Colau, from Ingleton area, North Yorkshire, has been invited across to Switzerland, to take part in some specialised avalanche search dog training. NSARDA are pleased to be able to support Andy on this trip, which will provide a good insight into working with search dogs in the Schilthorn, Berner Oberland area of Switzerland.
Whilst there, he will be liaising with Swiss experts and discussing the training methodology which we currently use here in the UK. Andy, who has had five graded mountain rescue search dogs, will be looking to pass some of his vast knowledge on to the Swiss handlers where he can, and also gain experience of their working methods. Andy is looking forward to discussing a number of ideas with their training manager, including scent discrimination techniques and how these may differ from our own.
No doubt during his time there, he may well be giving interviews which it is hoped, will further strengthen the ties between the associations.
During his time in Swizerland, and will be looking to get answers to a long list of questions he has put together, and also obtain a series of specific photographs which fully portray both interviews and training in the field.
We’re looking forward to Andy’s reports and photographs, and these will be loaded onto NSARDA’s social media as we receive them
